Farmhouse for Dr. Gupta, Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The Architecture of the space is derived from the amalgamation of traditional construction technique with a contemporary style of Architecture. Built on a flat patch of land in the scorching head to Jodhpur, various simple construction techniques have been used such as cavity walls, filler slabs and where ever possible north lighting is used to keep the interior temperature in check and reduce the cooling cost. Designed on a long and narrow plot of 20’x68’, this is a two storey modern family dwelling in Jaipur. Situated in a tight spot between residences on three sides and sharing the longer sides with the neighbors. Thus the residence is designed to bring in daylight into the darkest areas and naturally vent it. A rear court and a front garden with parking facilitates cross ventilation through the open layout of the house. A courtyard next to the living room and the kitchen brings in natural light and air to the center of an otherwise tightly packed plot. The First Floor plate is inset from the front façade, creating a double height space in the Living Room and allowing for larger openings on this façade, thus facilitating more daylight into the house. The double height spaces in the living room interconnect the two levels. The large openings on the front façade are inset to prevent direct evening sun, as the building is oriented towards the West.
